NNPC LIMITED, NIGER REPUBLIC SET TO PARTNER ON CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Ltd has expressed its readiness to partner with Niger Republic’s Petroleum Ministry in capacity building.
This was made known by the Group Chief Executive Officer, Mallam Mele Kyari when he played host to a delegation of the Nigerien Ministry of Petroleum at the NNPC Towers, recently.
Kyari, who was represented by the Executive Vice President (EVP) Downstream, Engr. Adeyemi Adetunji said NNPC Ltd. was ready to collaborate with the West African nation’s petroleum sector in capacity building and experience sharing.
“We understand your visit is a short one, but we would be willing to assist in areas where NNPC Ltd can provide initial discussions and share experiences on the best ways to develop your country’s oil and gas industry,” the GCEO stated.
He added that Nigeria has always collaborated with Niger Republic, one of which was the possibility of sourcing petroleum products from Niger’s Zinder Refinery, known as SORAZ.
Kyari said Niger Republic is also part of the consortium for nations on the Trans Sahara Gas Pipeline (TSGP) project, an initiative that will further enhance industrialization and economic prosperity of the West African region.
Earlier in his address, the Secretary-General of the Nigerien Petroleum Ministry, Mr. Zoubairou Muazou who led the delegation, said they were in NNPC as part of their familiarization visit to Nigeria to seek the Company’s partnership in building capacity within the country’s emerging oil and gas industry.
Muazou, who acknowledged NNPC Limited’s experience and vast knowledge in the oil and gas industry said Niger Republic has a lot to learn from Nigeria in the industry’s value chain. He noted that Niger Republic became an oil producing nation in 2011 and has a small refinery of 20,000 barrels per day (bpd) capacity, which meets its local demand and leaves a little for export.
He however observed that Niger being young in the oil and gas industry needs to develop its local content strategy, local content policy and petroleum governance laws to strengthen its oil and gas industry.
This, he said, necessitated the visit of its Ministry to Nigeria to learn how its neighbour transitioned through this various process to maximize the resources for full value realization.
