In its quest to capture the targeted 30% market share in petroleum products retailing in the country, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has commissioned a standard filling station in Tarauni, Kano State.

Kano State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje cut the tape on Tuesday to dispense the first litres of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) at the station, symbolising yet another step in increasing NNPC Limited's growing petroleum downstream asset portfolio and fulfilling its mandate of providing energy security for the country.

The station, which is to be known as NNPC Standard Station, Tarauni, boasts of a huge forecourt, which can accommodate 50 vehicles with six pumps and 12 noozles at a time. It also has non-fuel features such as a mini mart, lube bay and vehicles diagnostics centre, as well as shops for other activities.

Speaking during the commissioning, Governor Ganduje, who expressed gratitude to the NNPC Limited for siting the project in his state, described the company as efficient and effective in providing services for the people of the state and beyond.

Recalling when he approved NNPC Limited’s request for a piece of land for the project, Ganduje also commended the company for sustaining high-level integrity in petroleum products marketing.

“You are stabilizing the prices of petroleum products. While private individuals, companies selling petrol and other petroleum products are increasing their prices at will, you are known to sell at the controlled price. When people are affected by harsh prices, they dash to the NNPC because they know they will get better services here. We thank you for that,” he noted.

While pledging to continuously provide effective security for the filling station, the Governor stressed the importance of the filling station, not only to the state, but to neighbouring countries as well, emphasizing the nexus between commercial activities and vehicular movement of goods and services. 

Earlier in his remarks, the Group Chief Executive Officer, NNPC Limited, Mallam Mele Kyari, represented by the Executive Vice President, Downstream,  Engr. Adeyemi Adetunji, stated that the project  was midwifed by NNPC Retail Ltd, a downstream business unit of NNPC Limited.

According to him, the Management of NNPC Limited remains committed to upscaling the company’s relevance in the global energy community with its drive for sustainability hinged on renewed commitment to partnerships that deliver sustainable value and integrity.

Describing the station as a strategic initiative geared towards boosting the nation’s energy sufficiency levels, he assured that it will make petroleum and allied products available and affordable, just as it would  provide relief and job opportunities for the people of the state.
